Yunnan Coffee’s First Cupping Event in Madrid: A Celebration of Flavor and Culture

SHU FROM YUNNAN is thrilled to share the success of our first-ever Yunnan coffee cupping event in Madrid, hosted at the iconic La Bicicleta Café. The event was made possible through the introduction and support of Ana, the founder of Coffee and Translation, who connected us with Madrid’s vibrant coffee community. While we have previously showcased Yunnan coffee in Barcelona, this was our first opportunity to bring the rich flavors and culture of Yunnan to Madrid, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Held in the cool underground space of La Bicicleta Café, a café known for hosting engaging coffee-related events and cultivating a strong local community, the event sold out within just one day of tickets being released. The cupping session drew a crowd of coffee professionals, enthusiasts, and newcomers to the world of cupping, all eager to experience Yunnan’s diverse coffee heritage.

The event itself was a highly engaging experience, with attendees actively participating and helping to break the burst of cups as they explored the coffees. It was a dynamic process, with everyone sharing their thoughts and discussing the flavors and characteristics of each cup. Participants had the chance to discover a range of Yunnan’s finest coffees, exploring different processing methods such as washed, honey, and natural varieties, all while engaging in lively discussions.

The star of the event was the debut of Yunnan Geisha, which quickly became the favorite among participants for its bright acidity and complex flavor profile.

In addition to the coffee, we introduced the Wa ethnic group’s intangible cultural heritage, featuring sustainable products made from repurposed coffee grounds. Items such as sachets, earrings, and fabric created from coffee yarn were displayed, showing how coffee-waste can be transformed into beautiful and functional creations. This innovative combination of culture, sustainability, and coffee was one of the highlights of the event, offering a new perspective on how coffee can contribute to both the environment and cultural preservation.

The event in Madrid was a wonderful opportunity to connect with a new audience, introduce Yunnan coffee, and celebrate the rich cultural traditions that come with it. We are grateful to the wonderful coffee community in Madrid for their enthusiastic participation.
